All vineyards are dry-farmed, head-trained, thus reducing our dependency on irrigation and energy. They are steeply sloping, requiring much of the work to be accomplished on foot. We believe all of these factors influence the depth and unique character of the wines of AmByth Estate. Our vineyards: Mark’s Vineyard, StoneCross, Terrace, & PlayGround. The portable coop is moved daily throughout the vineyards allowing the chickens to range freely among the vines, eating insects, and scratching the soil while fertilizing it at the same time with their manure. They mix with the dogs and the cats, making themselves right at home. They enliven the land with their valuable manure, aerate the soil with their hooves, and are an excellent source of weed control. The bees play a vital role in pollination throughout our estate: pollinating our gardens, fruit & nut trees and native landscape plants. The first time his father plowed after WWII, he used oxen. These beginnings perhaps led to the desire to grow our products naturally and make pure wine with no chemicals. Phillip always knew he wanted to be close to the land and craft something of value so his dream became a reality when he started AmByth in 1998. His hobby and passion before and throughout 30+ years of being in the flooring industry became his life. Phillip speaks at occasional seminars and panels and pours and shares AmByth around the world. Mary Morwood Hart grew up on a horse and cattle farm in Oklahoma. Her mother was devoted to organic vegetable gardening in their home garden. She attributes her belief in pure farming to witnessing her mom's pursuit of purity on the farm. Mary is Phillip’s other half and helps any way she can. Together, they have a son, Bede, who is homeschooled and lends a helping hand when needed. He had been visting the central coast since he was a child with his father and when the property was purchased and his father’s dream came to reality, Gelert felt a closer connection to the land and way of life in the Paso country and considered it home. Gelert moved south after high school and completed a Recreation and Tourism Management Degree at San Diego State University. He met his wife to-be, Robyn, in San Diego and after college they moved to Montana enjoying and working in the great outdoors along with a little exploring of the Rockies and the Pacific Northwest. Then they moved to Hawaii to be close to Robyn’s family and worked with the largest food broker and importer for the islands. Gelert came back to his California roots a few years later when his father Phillip invited him to learn the ways of AmByth and eventually run the vineyard and winery. He knew from an early age he did not want to wear a suit and tie and sit-behind-a-desk lifestyle so outdoor vineyard work and craftsmanship of creating wine is the perfect fit. Learning mostly from Phillip and reading literature, Gelert now carries out all aspects outside and inside, also on the road with pourings and sales. Robyn is originally from Hawaii and decided to attend college on the mainland in San Diego where she met Gelert. After a stint of fine restaurant management in Montana and working closely with wine selections, finding her role at AmByth seemed second nature. Robyn now enjoys meeting visitors to the estate, pouring intimate tastings, and you can even find her helping in the vineyard and the winery. Gelert and Robyn joined AmByth full time in 2015.
